    You have found the right handrail, taken the measurements and already know where you would like to install it.

    Then a question comes up: the wall has external thermal insulation. Can I still install the handrail?

    The answer is yes: installation can also be considered on a wall with external wall insulation. However, there is one important difference compared with a traditional wall: you should not choose the fixing system without knowing what is behind the finished surface.

    The real issue, therefore, is not the handrail itself. It is understanding where and how the brackets will actually be anchored.

    Why an insulated wall requires more attention

    When we look at a finished wall, we only see its outer surface.

    With external wall insulation, however, there is an insulating layer between that surface and the masonry behind it. Its thickness can vary from one building to another, and the underlying structure may also be different.

    For this reason, it should not be treated as though you simply need to drill into a standard wall and insert a wall plug.

    A handrail is specifically designed to provide a point of support. The fixing system must therefore be compatible with the actual wall on which it will be installed.

    Before starting, it is important to know at least three things: the thickness of the insulation, the material of the wall behind it and the position where the brackets will be installed.

    External insulation does not mean you have to give up on a handrail

    This is probably the most important concern to clear up.

    Having external thermal insulation does not automatically make it impossible to install a handrail.

    It simply means that the fixing system needs to be assessed more carefully.

    There are specific fixing solutions designed to pass through the insulation layer and reach the structural substrate behind it. However, the correct solution depends on the actual installation and cannot be chosen simply by looking at the handrail itself.

    This is also why, when external insulation is present, it is better to carry out this check before ordering, rather than when the product has already arrived and installation is about to begin.

    What to check before buying

    The first thing to establish is how thick the insulation is.

    If you have documentation from the insulation or renovation work carried out on the property, you can often find this information without carrying out any invasive checks.

    The second point is the wall behind the insulation. Different types of masonry may require different anchoring systems.

    Finally, you need to consider the exact installation point.

    An externally insulated wall, an internal staircase with a particular wall covering or a situation where the wall construction is not clearly known should not automatically be treated in the same way.

    If this information is unavailable, it is better to clarify the situation before proceeding.

    The mistake to avoid: automatically using any wall plug

    When buying a handrail, it is natural to focus mainly on its length, profile and finish.

    The fixing system is often considered only at the end.

    On a conventional wall, this may be a relatively straightforward decision. On an insulated wall, it should not be taken for granted.

    Can I install the handrail myself?

    For many standard installations, someone who is comfortable using a drill, spirit level and tightening tools may be able to complete the installation.

    The situation changes when the structure of the wall is not clearly known.

    If external insulation is present and you do not know what material lies behind it, how thick the insulation is or which fixing system is required, using a qualified installer is the more prudent choice.

    Not because the handrail itself is particularly difficult to install, but because the supporting wall needs to be assessed correctly.

    Once this point has been resolved, the rest of the installation becomes much more straightforward.

    Check the wall first, then choose the handrail

    There is a simple way to avoid many installation mistakes.

    Before choosing the fixing system, answer this question:

    “What will the brackets actually be anchored into?”

    Do not focus only on the visible surface of the wall.

    If you know the type of masonry and the thickness of the insulation, it will be much easier to identify a compatible solution. If you do not have this information, it is better to find it out or ask for advice.

    This check only takes a few minutes, but it can prevent many problems and uncertainties during installation.

    What about choosing the handrail?

    Once the wall construction has been clarified, you can focus on the aspects that actually concern the handrail: length, position, profile and finish.

    Once this has been checked, you can choose the handrail size and configuration that best suits the space.
